Eye in the Sky

HD eye in the sky to be exact.

This is an idea I had by watching the Flying iPhone 4! (HD Aerial Video) video.

And I thought, what about that concept times a thousand!. But how exactly whould that go? well, let me explain.

What I thought was a much more complicated setup consisting of a very small pc (Dell Studio Desktop or Mac Mini kind of pc) so its light weight and small. A means to power it, I think batteries should do. Other things that it could have are:

• 4 HD webcams to record the trip (of course).
• Gyroscope stabilizer would be nice so the video feed is watchable.
• Altimeter would be awesome to record height data.
• USB GPS dongle to record the position of the device (this could serve as an altimeter, GPS also gives altitude I think).
• Maybe a means of communication with earth during flight. (WiFi definitely is not going to cut it, we need to find something else)
• Some other things that would be cool to add…
• Ohh… And a parachute, VERY important!!! with all that equipment we would like to bring it back safely to earth.

With this setup there are some problems still. Like for instance the freezing that occurs at high altitudes in the atmosphere, the watter condensation, and also it would be nice a way to guide it down to an aproximate place in earth so we don’t have to go 100 miles of shore to pick it up.

This is just an idea… it may become true though. I just have to find people (engineers) interested in it and do it as a “Just because we can” proyect.
